Firecrests, migrants and movements

In early September we move a proportion of our Teifi Marshes site ringing from reedbed sites to the scrub site near the river view point.

At Mallard Pond,  the reedbed edge with a single net can be productive in autumn for a short session as birds moving along the adjacent hedge line. A Firecrest was the first of autumn on the 26th. This is early compared with previous years.

A second was ringed on the 28th at our river viewpoint site - discussed above.

Firecrest

Only three birds on the 5th October at Mallard Pond, but variety with a juvenile male Sparrowhawk, a Chiffchaff and a Reed Bunting recruited to our RAS with colour rings added.

Sparrowhawk

Cors Caron has had the usual mix of birds for early autumn including Stonechats and Redpolls. There is always an increase in Reed Buntings with 84 ringed since September 1st.

With the arrival of autumn, lamping has started again. Jane, Aaron and Jess have been continuing their study of birds roosting on farmland both coastal and further inland. Golden Plover and Snipe numbers are increasing
